Immigration

Blog #2- Due Thursday, October, 3rd

Unless you are a descendant of a Native American tribe, your family at some point was an immigrant to the United States. Answer and discuss the following questions. Remember to come back more than once to see if people have responded to you.

When did your ancestors come to the United States and where did they come from?

What were some of the problems that immigrants faced when they arrived in the United States?

Should the United States continue to allow immigrants into the United States?

What rights should new immigrants have once they get to the United States?

    5. my mom's side of the family came from Germany. my grandma was just a little girl when her family moved. my dads side came from Italy. My dad looks very Italian be I look more German. I'm sure a lot of immigrants were coming to America with no clue what America even was so it made it quite difficult to find I job. I think that America should still allow immigrants to come to America because everyone deserves a second chance and finding a new life in a different place is one way to start over.

  2. I think the United States should continue to allow immigrants into the United States because it allows them to get a head start on life and have a better education. Some new rights new immigrants should have is getting somewhere to stay if they are poor.Another right should be is to give them a big check so they can move into a house. Some problems when new immigrants arrived into the United States are not having the rights they should have. The United States is a free country and we all should be treated equal.

But when you get older some people do not use their educations for jobs then some of those people will become poor. But use the education you get when you get here and learn it to get ajob and not be poor, this way if every one did that it would be even more fair.

  3. I think that immigrants should have the rights to be brought to the United States so they can live a normal life just like we do.So they can have a job and life free and enjoy special things but all immigrants should be equal just like we all are.My parents don't know anything about immigrants and where everything happened ,and the United States should allow immigrants to be in the US. When immigrants should have all rights to get a job or make money some how and get a house where there family can be safe and not living on the streets but everybody should be equal no matter what happens in life.

  4. Some of the problems immagrants faced in the united states was not finding jobs. The immagrants came to the united states with no money and no where to live. They would struggle to find jobs but most would go to the city to work in factories and would save up the little money they had from the jobs, Also the immagrants faced not being able to do the things american citizens could do. They would struggle to speak english and would have trouble contacting people.

There was not much space because a lot of people wanted to come to the United States. When he got here he wasn't used to the life style of U.S. citizens. My grandpa got called a lot of bad names and people did cruel things to him. he didn't like it at all at first but then people got used to him. My grandpa became friends with many different kinds of people and ended up fitting in well.

Plus, when the immigrants got to America they had to go through a bunch of tests to see if they were sick. i bet a lot of the immigrants weren't allowed into the US because of the diseases they got on the boat. Which is terrible because i bet a lot of the people were good and just wanted a better life but had to go back to their old country.

I think that immigrants should be treated equally immigrants should not be judged by their appearance/ their religion its just not fair to them.... immigrants should have the right to say what they want to say. they should also have as much freedom as people from they U.S because its not fair that people from the U.S should only have freedom and not immigrants.... also people should be nice and pleased that the immigrants chose to come to America because the immigrants didn't have to come to America... So people should be respectful to the new immigrants.

    3. A lot of people immigrate to the U.S. because we are a welcoming country and don't treat citizens the same way that their countries did. There are also a lot of opportunities here. I also think that they should come here legally.

  16. When immigrants arrived in the U.S the Americans treated them harshly. For example the immigrants got paid less than the normal Americans did. Also they were made fun of because they did not know English. Last but not least people made fun of them because of their looks and their religion. People should not be HATERS.

I think the U.S should still allow immigrants. I think we should because we have a lot to offer for a little amount of people unlike countries like japan with their population.

We should have rules for immigrants for when they move here. They should have their birth certificate and they should have their records check. If their record is bad they should not be allowed in the U.S.

    2. Some problems that immigrants faced when the arrived to the United States were that they kind of got bullied because of their religions, the languages the spoke, and their skin color. They also had a hard time finding jobs and places to live.
    3. I think the United States should allow immigrants because it's the right thing to do. Most of the time, they come here to start a new life because their old one isn't very good. They also come here to escape war, starvation, and religious persecution. So they should be able t emigrate so they can start a brand new life.
    4. I also think that immigrants should have rights. For example, they should be considered American citizens. They should also have the same rights as any American. Like, freedom of speech, and religion, right to bear arms, citizenship, right to vote, income tax, women's suffrage, and so on and so forth.

  23. My ancestors immigrated to the United States from a variety of countries in the early 1900's. All were originally from Europe, including the following countries, Italy, France, England, Germany, Ireland and Scotland. According to my grandparents, my ancestors faced multiple problems upon entering the United States. More specifically, they experienced language barriers, particularly those from, Italy, France and Germany. Additionally, it was hard for them to secure employment sufficient enough to provide for their families. Furthermore, my ancestors had a difficult time being accepted into the country and basically experienced racism. With regard to continuing to have immigrants permitted to enter the United States, I believe that immigrants should be given the opportunity to come into the country. Although I believe that immigrants should continue to be allowed, I do think there should be a formal process, whereby potential candidates indicate exactly why they feel inclined to come to the United States. Essentially, the United States was built by immigrants and it would be somewhat contradictory to no longer permit immigration to occur. I also embrace the diversity that immigration fosters. Lastly, over a specified period of time, immigrants should be allowed to earn equal rights, such as voting and citizenship. Even though I am the fourth generation since my ancestors arrived in the US, I still have strong ties to my roots and believe that future immigrants will feel the same way.

  24. My ancestors came from central Italy in the 1960s, and Germany, but I don't know how long ago they came from Germany or what part they were from.
But when all immigrants came here, they faced all similar problems. On the boat over there was limited space, people passing on illness, and limited food. And when they got here, they had to live with unpleasant homes and people. Many were mean to the new comers and treated them poorly.
I believe that those people had no right treating the immigrants poorly and that immigrants should be welcome to the United States. However, the immigrants should also have to become a citizen before they are given their equal rights of voting, etc.

  25. 1.) I am not sure what year my ancestors came to the United States but what I do know, is that they came from Italy.

2.) The biggest problem that immigrants had to face was language. They had difficulty speaking and understanding what to do and how to do it. Most immigrants settled in places where their neighbors spoke the same language. Another problem was that they had to find jobs. Finding a job was difficult for most immigrants because of the language problem. People discriminated each other about religion, race, language etc.

3.) In my opinion, I do not think that we should keep letting immigrants come into the United States. I think this because the world is different now a days and there are more crimes committed each day and the world is not as safe as it used to be. I feel that letting other people come into the United States allows terrorism. I just think that we would be a safer country if people weren't allowed to immigrate over here anymore.

4.) Once immigrants get to the United States I think that they all should have equal rights. I think both men and women should have the right to vote. I also think they should have the right to worship whichever God or religion that they choose to worship without discrimination.

    1. nice blog! i too agree that terrorism is becoming a serious problem these days. although, i dont belive this will be solved by stopping immigration. it will only make tension between the countries.... along that line, the terrorist problem you were addressing might be solved by asking for proper identification when immigrants are coming into america.

  26. 1. My ancestors came from Germany or Prussia around 1860. Some of the problems immigrants faced when they arrived is not having jobs or suitable jobs. They didn't know much so they had to find jobs in big factories getting paid almost nothing. Also, not knowing the native language must have been tough for immigrants moving from places with a whole different language. I believe the United States should keep letting immigrants come into the United States because just like back in the olden days the people are looking for a better life and what better place than the USA. Rights immigrants should have when they get to the United States is the right to be treated equally like everyone else, and just be able to have a good life just like anyone else in our country.

  28. My great-great grandfather became a citizen of the U.S. in 1888. We don't know when he actually arrived. Prior to immigrating he served in the Prussian army while in Germany. Another great-great grandfather came over as a baby. His father was a carpenter by trade. He was hired to do carpentry work on the boat as payment for the voyage to the U.S. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1830 from Germany.
Problems immigrants may have faced were language barriers, no income, lack of skill, housing, food, clothing, and no moral support.
I believe that the U.S. should continue to allow immigrants to enter. I believe this because immigrants are the ones who founded our country.
I think that immigrants should be allowed to have the same rights as everybody else because they are trying to fit in and should be permitted to.

  48. Years before I was born, at the time of about 1985, my grandparents with their 4 kids (including my dad in his teens). In 1999,my dad went back to "the homeland" (Russia) propose to my mom. When my parents got married, they both came to America. I was born a year later. When other immigrants came to the U.S. , they faced way more problems than my family. First off, lots of immigrants looked really different compared to other Americans. For example, the Asians (such as Chinese) had different shaped eyes and skin tone. Many of these immigrants were made fun of by other Americans. And, many of those immigrants didn't speak English very well. This made it harder for them to communicate with other people. Even the cultures that the immigrants had became an issue. A lot of the older immigrants didn't want to change their cultures. For example, Yiddish women wore wigs. The Yiddish people also didn't go to work on Saturday. ( Some people did to support their families). The wigs looked kind of awkward and going to work on Saturday was a NO. The immigrants just a difficult time fitting in. The U.S. should continue to let immigrants come here because many people have important cause to come here even today. Some people come to get religious freedom like my family or to escape persecution. Once immigrants come to the U.S., they should have rights. They should be able to change their names if they wish to give them a sense of reassurance if they are being persecuted, and made sure they have somewhere to go because if they have nowhere to go, they could get lost, or hurt.

  50. My ancestors came to America from Italy in the early 1900's, I don't know the exact year. Some of the problems immigrants faced when they arrived in the United States is all of the tests they had to go through. For example, they had to check the immigrants eyes to see if they were ill. If the immigrants were ill, they had to go back to where they came from, they could not enter the United States. Another problem is most of the immigrants didn't speak english. As you could imagine, this was a huge problem because they could get into trouble for not doing the right thing because they don't understand because they don't speak english. I think the United States sould continue to allow immigrants into the United States because the U.S. is full of more oppourtunities than some other countries. Also, we have more freedom than some other places. I think everyone should have that oppourtunity. Once new immigrants come to the United States, I believe they should have all of the rights Americans have because they are sort of an American now.

  56. Some problems that immigrants face when arriving to America was the health checks. If they got sick on the way over they would have to try and hide it or be faced with going back home. Many of the immigrants had no idea how to speak English and knew no American customs, so they were pretty much had to relearn everything from eating to manners. It was very difficult for them to make an honest living when some employers under paid them. Also some immigrants were discriminated because of their race or skin color, the nativist (people against immigration) tried to make it illegal for immigrants to come into America.
Yes the United States should allow immigrants to come here. It is a free country where in other countries you are penalized for your religion or race. In America everyone has a chance to be equal and to fit in. Some people come to get away from a war, people should always be able to pick where they feel the safest during war or at any time.
New immigrants should have all the rights that American citizens do. Once they are in this country they should be treated just as everyone else is. Just because they are not a citizen doesn't mean that they should have equality. The United States should allow immigrants to still come here. It opens up the spread of culture through out the world, and helps people start new lives in a new place for the better.

My reasoning for this is that in time, if enough immigrants come, they would take up many job spots that could have gone to another person who was born in the U.S. Another reason is that when immigrants come over, they usually are poor and don't have a lot of money, which means in time the government will have to pay for their basic needs and the government will lose money. For some immigrants, getting used to America's customs was completely new to them. Others had already had family members that had been to or lived in America so they new a little about it. Finding jobs and fitting in was another hassle for them. Sadly, a lot of the immigrants were judged based on their skin tone, language, and/or religion. If you couldn't speak English, then it was much harder for you to get a job. It was also hard if you weren't experienced at all.
Even though some people can be racist or against immigration, I do think that the United States should allow it. Some people in other foreign countries don't have what they need over in their country like enough food or a good home or even a job! That's why they want to come to America; they're relying on their new home to provide them their needs to start a new and happy life.
I think that the immigrants should have rights because they are human beings just like us and they should all be treated equally. There should be no discrimination against anyone!

1.) My dad's great great great (ex.) grandfather, Anton Biscoping, immigrated to America from Fredeburg, Germany. 2.) Immigrants faced many problems when they arrived in the United States. Some problems that they faced were not being able to understand the English language. This caused problems when an American tried talking to an immigrant because the immigrants couldnt understand what the American's were saying. Another problem immigrants faced was waiting in line for the exam to see if they had any medical problems after getting off the boat. Some immigrants waited a long time just to find out that they had to go back to their home land because they had a medical problem. Parents and children were sepperated during these exams because (for example) a fathers son could be sick and the father isnt, so the father would have to ride the boat, again, to go back to their home land to bring his son there and then ride back to America and meet up with the rest of his family (if there was anymore family.)
3.) The United States should continue to allow immigrants into the United States only for a couple reasons. If the immigrants pay their taxes, are able to work, and are willing to contribute to the society and not come here just to use us because we have a good system then I would say, let the United States keep on allowing immigrants into the United States.
4.) New immigrants should have the same rights that American's already have because its not fair that they get more rights than us. The immigrants should have to work for more rights if they want them.

im torn for this answer. I think that the state our country is in it is risky to let immigrants in with all the problems we have had and how its a dangerous world. but on the other hand I don't want to turn away someone who is hardworking and just trying to make a better life for themselves.

I think that the U.S. should still allow immigrants to come into America because they have the right to have a chance at a good life as well as the people who are already in America. If you didn't fit in you were bullied by other Americans or picked on because of your skin color, facial features, or you didn't speak English. I do believe that immigrants should be allowed to come into the United States because they are people like everyone else. 71. 1. My Dad's ancestors immigrated from Ireland and Germany to America in the late 1800's, whereas my Mom's ancestors came from Germany, Poland, Ireland and Scotland in the early 1900's.

    2. Some of the problems that immigrants faced when traveling to the U.S.A. were the horrible living conditions on the ships over, the lack of food, and the fact that they were so closely packed together that disease spread quickly.

    3. The United States should continue to allow immigrants into the country. If we're allowed into other countries, then they should be allowed into ours. We should be able to have the choice to live wherever we want.

    4. Immigrants that are allowed into the United States should be treated the same as everyone else. Anyone that the Government trusts to come into the country should be treated with the same rights as any other human being.

My ancestors chiefly came from England and Ireland, around 1900, give or take. Some problems that immigrants faced were the dislike from Americans. Basically, no one liked them. That made It hard to find jobs and such. I think that letting immigrants in would be an opportunity to grow in population. Although I can't think of many who would come to America in this economic trough in history. When new immigrants come to the US, they should have as much right as any other citizen. If they are willing to become American, than we should allow them to.

  73. yes the united states should still allow immigrants because this a free world and free of religion which is one of the reasons why they came here because their homes would get attacked by others. Another reason is that the immigrants can find jobs and try to start their life in America

  74. My ancestors on my moms side came from South Africa, Johannesburg which my mom was born there then moved to America when she was 13 years old. My mom was treated fairly but my ancestors may not have because of the color of their skin. My mom was an immigrant till she took the test to be a U.S. citizen.

  75. Immigrants should have the same rights as a normal American citizen but should have all paper work in and has a plan for what they are going to do here. Immigrants have to work just as hard as like a normal citizen would.

    1. That is all true but I have to add the immigrants also earn there way into the country. This is another reason why they should stay in the country, unlike us they have worked to be called a citizen of the US.

  76. New immigrants should have all the rights that American citizens do. Once they are in this country they should be treated just as everyone else is. Just because they are not a citizen doesn't mean that they should have equality. If someone from Greece commits a crime he or she should be sentenced the same as someone else who did the same crime as them

  78. My ancestors mainly from Ireland, Polish, and Germany and they came in i think the early or mid 1800's. Some of the problems the immigrants faced when thery came to America were adjusting to new customs, learning a new language, getting a job, and many more problems. I do believe immigrants should still be allowed to come to the United States because we can learn alot about different cultures, and customs. The United states is where people come to be free and express their religion so if immigrants want to come to the United States and ddo that, then i think they should be allowed to. I think the immigrants should have the same rights and same laws as Americans, they should be treated the same as us!

  79. I am a descendent from a Native American tribe. I am a descendant from a tribe in Oklahoma named the Cherokee. From what i know about my family history, my grandmother about 4 or 5 generations ago was a princess of the Cherokee Indians. As well as me being native american some of my family came from multiple parts of Europe. I dont know much about my European ancestors but i know that i am partly German, Irish, and i know that my great great great grandmother survived the Halucaust.

  80. 2) Some of the problems immigrants faced when they arrived in America were rights and jobs. Immigrants were not allowed to vote, even as US citizens. Being treated poorly was only one problem immigrants faced. Another problem was being denied jobs. Many nativists but up signs such as NO IRISH ALLOWED on their businesses. MOst immigrants found jobs in factories but that did not give them enough money to raise a family. In conclusion, immigants lived hard lives due to these problems.

  82. my ancestors came from Holland in the late 1800's. it was kind of hard for then to come over beacause they left all of there family over in Holland beacause they came for better jobs. also some of my ancestors came from irland. it was hard for them because they didn't fully understand the customs of the americans. they weren't treated like other americans they were treated like out standers and like they didn't fit in.

  83. Some problems immigrants faced were learning how to fit into the American culture. Examples like learning how to speak english, learinging how to use manners, and simple stuff like figuring out how to use our money.

  85. I believe we as americans should let imagrants into the counrty because we call our selves a free nation because we let people of all nationalities into the united states. This has a part in why they moved to the united states because they came not to be judged or ruled but for those people who were sick on their voyage here were sometimes sent back because when they arrived in the America sick they didnt want the deseases to spread they were aloud to stay for a couple days to get better but if they did not get better they where sent back to their home countries. When new imagrants arrive in the united states they should have the rights of religion any skin color freedom of speech and freedom of the press this would make these people feel important and free.

My ancestors came from Germany i dont know where because my dad and my grandma (that is now deceased) diddnt know where they exectly came from but they came from germany and immigrated to america. my dads dad was german so he passed down german to us that is how im 95% german. they should be able to come into america because once you are a legal american you are an american. yes they should come into america because if you come t america legaly then you are free. immagrants should get all the right american citezens because once you are an american you are a legal citizen. immigrants had to get a job and money to support their family they did not know any of our customs or language so they had to learn.

  88. My ancestors came from different native American tribes, and those were my great great great grandparents.
Some of the problems immigrants faced upon coming to America was segregation, bullying, and not knowing English. It was a hard transition for them, due to different cultures and beliefs. Also, they had different colored skin, features, and language that made it hard for them to fit in with society. They didn't have much money,so they would have to get a job as soon as they got there, most often a factory job.
