Welcome Back!

Blog #1- Due Thursday, September 12

Welcome back to school! I hope you had a fantastic summer and that you are as excited as I am to start off this new school year on the right foot! I am really looking forward to having a great year!

For your first blog I want you to write one thing that you remember learning about last year in social studies. Be specific on what you remember, and why you remember learning about it. Don't just say, "I remember learning about the Revolutionary War because it was cool." Give specific details about the topic that you remember most and specific reasons why you remember it.

Also, please tell me one thing you are looking forward to or are hoping to learn about this year in social studies. Again, please be specific.

***Remember, the more detailed your responses are, the more credit you will earn. Also remember that you must read and comment on other responses in order to earn full credit!!!!

  1. One thing that i remember from last year was that Mr.Akers put up the preamble on youtube and i remember it by the beginning of the preamble by "We the people" The preamble is pretty much just the intro of the constition. The constition is about giving America rules and giving America a government.

What I would like to learn about is World War 2. World War 2 was one of the deadliest war in America. I would like to know who were the leaders of the war.

    1. I pretty much agree with the preamble part but not so much with the fact that the civil war was more deadly than world war 2.

    8. I believe that WWII was more deadlier than the Civil War because almost 7 times the amount of people that died in the Civil War died in WWII.

  2. One thing I remember that I learned from last year in social studies class is how a bill becomes a law.One interesting fact is a bill is introduced in the senats or the House of Representatives by a member.Another fact is the governor signs the bill into law or may veto all or part of it,but if the governor or president do not take action it may become a law.
One thing I would want to learn about is World War 2 because it was one of the deadliest wars. Another thing I would want to know is about how many people died in this war.

  4. One thing I remember learning last year in social studies was the American Revolution. It all started at Lexington and Concord when the first shot was fired. At this time there was no continental army and few people had any experience of being in the army. Many American were also against the war and did not want any part of it. The Albany plan of union was then created by Benjamin Franklin to join the colonial council in order to make a stronger defense against Great Brittan. The famous political cartoon "Join or Die" was drawn to tell everyone that if they don't come together as one, they will have no chance of winning back their independence that they deserved.

One thing I am looking forward to learning about this year is World War 2. My Grandpa fought in that war so I think it will be interesting to learn the causes and how many countries were involved in it.

One thing i remember learning from last year is the declaration of independence,i liked learning about this because mr.Akers really liked teaching it and he made it fun to learn he showed the class a youtube video it was a remake of the song apologize by Justin Timberlake,Mr.akers also made learning the declaration of independence fun by being interactive and engaging with the class.on the other hand one thing i am looking forward to learning this year is the cold war i am looking forward to learning about the cold war because some people believe it was inevitable and no party was entirely to blame for the cold war.

  6. One thing I remember from last year is when I learned about immigrants moving to America. My teacher had a virtual tour of things immigrants would have seen and went through. Like immigrants would have seen the statue of liberty when they were riding the boat to the new world. It also told about how immigrants would have to go thru many tests such as tests that would see if you had any infections. If they did have infections or diseases they would not be allowed to go into the new world. They also would have to give all the information on why they were entering America. This was something I remember from last year. This year I would am excited to learn about the roaring twenties because I like learning about things that have happened in the past. I have a feeling the 20's was an exciting decade in the 1900's.

Also in this book i read "Ashes of Roses" the girls brother couldnt get past the border cause he had an eye disease. My question is what if an immigrant couldnt afford a ride back to their country after they couldnt get into America... What would they do then.

  9. I remember learning about the Constitution because we did a lot on it. So learning all these things really made stuff about the Constitution stick in my head. Mr. Akers and some kids sang the song about the Constitution in class when the subject came up. the way that Mr. Akers taught us was a fun wat to remember things. The Constitution has the Bill of Rights in it which is good because the Bill of Rights is for the people and helps them out. One thing I am looking forward to this year is all the major things that happened back then. I can't say spacificly what I want to learn because there are so many.

  10. one thing i remember from last year that i learned about were slaves and what they were used for in the colonies. There were a wide variety of uses for the slaves. The most use for them was cotton picking. They would sit in the sun for hours at a time picking thousands of pieces of cotton. Before the cotton gin was invented the slaves would have to pick the cotton seeds out of the cotton balls. they were treated very poorly. Such as when they were brought over from Africa the people who captured them would put them in the bottom of the boat laying down chained in to the floor. they would cram thousands of slaves into one boat with no bathroom so they would be sitting in there own (#2) all day. but finally after a long time the north stepped in and saved the slaves.

  13. One thing I learned from last year was the War Of 1812. While the North didn't want the war because it would hurt trade, the South didn't really mind either way, but the West wanted the war against Britain. Britain was impressing American sailors into the British army, so President Madison decided that we would start the war. Britain was supplying Tecumseh and his confederation with supplies to protect themselves from the oncoming settlers. Also Britain put a blockade on us, so the North learned how to survive without trade. In the end we won the battle against Britain, the country with the best Navy in the world. I would like to learn about World War 2 and the holocaust and tactics used in it, like the Burn Scorch Earth tactic.

Things like the sugar act which is a tax on sugar and molasses. Also there was mercantilism which is the economic belief that colonies should benefit the mother country through trade. There was also the French and Indian War was during the American Revolution. One thing i want to learn this year is around the 1920's because that's around the Great Depression and i want to know about the Great Depression.

  15. what i remembered last year is the Aztecs made canals and floating gardens. The sun god was most important to them. 20. Last year I learned alot of interesting things. But my favorite of all was The Constitution and how it was formed. What i thought was interesting was how they thought of all the ideas for compromises to make the government just right, not too powerful and not too weak like in the Articles of Confederation. It was also interesting because it keeps the government in control and makes sure that the people can know when the government is trying to overpower us.One example of this is the new gun restrictions which is on the edge of not following our second ammendment rights.

  22. One topic I remember learning about last year was the Reform Movements. I learned a lot from this topic due to a DBQ. The Abolition Movements was the mission to end Slavery A book called, Uncle Tom's Cabin, by a women named Harriet Stowe. It showed those of the north the awful things slaves have to go through.. stirring up a lot of arguments. Additionally Harriet Tubman helped slaves escape using a passage, The Underground Railroad, bringing them to Mexico and Canada. Frederick Douglass was also an abolitionist. He tried to promote slavery by giving speeches and write articles and books. After many early Americans tried to stop slavery, it worked out.

  24. I remember when we learned about how a bill becomes a law. First a member of congress introduces the bill, then committees review and vote on the bill. The committees are small groups made up of senators or representatives. The committee can reject the bill and have it never be talked about again. If most of the people vote in favor of the bill, it gets sent back to the senate and the house. The senate and the house discuss and vote on the bill separately. If the votes are not in favor of the bill, the bill no longer exists. Although if the votes are in favor of the bill, it goes to the president for approval. In most cases the president veto's the bill, which means he refuses to sign it. Congress can try to overrule a veto. Although, if the president likes the bill he can sign it making it a law.

  31. One thing I remember learning last year in social studies class is about the Revolutionary War.I could understand it better than the other topics I learned. I tried to learn as much as I could about it and found some good information. Another reason that I remember the Revolutionary War is because I played a close to the same video game that had some really important parts in it except there were weapons that could have been in that time period but weren't, but it did help me remember a lot of things and it put me closer to the action of what happened. However, I would like to learn more about other wars and other things about them.

  32. Last year in Mr. Akers' 7th grade social studies class, I thoroughly enjoyed the unit on Native Americans/American Indians. More specifically, I was fascinated with how sophisticated and advanced the Mayan, Incan and Aztec civilizations were and how much of an impact they had on our current societal ways. For example, these early civilizations utilized calendars, math, a system of writing, canals and terrace farming. These early concepts continue to be a part of our culture, which proves how impressive their accomplishments were.
This year in 8th grade I look forward to expanding my knowledge on The Great Depression. My great grandmother has shared her experiences with me and I think it will be interesting to dig deeper into this part of American history.

  33. Last year i remember learning about early settlements in the thirteen English colonies. I remember learning about disputes in a group of people called the Puritans, specifically the Salem Witch Trials and how innocent people were accused of witchcraft. One of my favorite parts of this lesson was watching a movie that was meant to be a remake of the Salem Witch trials. In the movie it showed how the trials came about and how the lives of the accused had changed in their town. Also in the movie it showed the horrific results of the trials for many of the accused. This year in social studies, i am looking forward to learning about the "Roaring Twenties." I have read books and seen movies located in the 1920's and it seems like a fascinating time period in American history.

  34. One thing from last year that I remember is the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is the first ten amendments of the Constitution. Later the Bill of Rights were added to the Constitution to take the place of the laws that were amended. The Bill of Rights was needed to protect the basic liberties of the people. These were introduced by James Madison.

  35. One thing I remember last year from Social Studies was slavery. I remember how terrible the slaves were treated and what they were being forced to do, such as work day and night out on the fields picking cotton and wheat. The thing I remember most about slavery was how they were punished. They would be beaten so viciously to the point where they couldn't even walk. It made me really sad to just think about what they had to go through...
I'm not so sure on what I'm looking forward to in Social Studies this year; I'm just excited to learn some more new things about history. Everything is somewhat exciting to me and I can't wait to start learning.

  36. My favorite topic we learned about last year was the 13 Colonies. I like learning about them because we talked about them the longest out off all our topics so I felt like we learned a lot about them. It was interesting to me that each Colony had their own religion, separate government, and types of jobs. The northern colonies had industry and the south had farming. I liked that the Colonies were able to fight off England and earn their independence. This year in social studies I want to learn about world war II because I have seen a couple movies about it and I think it is interesting. I cant wait for social studies this year!

    1. Yeah I remembered that too and that to me is a very significant era or time period because it shows that blacks had the will and hope to endure all the pain and suffering. They enlightened themselves with spirituals and put there lives in the hand of God knowing he wold get them out. Also the slavery unit reminds me of the apartheid in Africa, that Nelson Mandela played a major part in ending, this was also a horrible and unjust series of events just like slavery in America.

    1. I would say mock congress (for whatever reason I call it contiential congress) because it was a great learning experience and it really let us connect with one another. for example, it was easy to connect with someone if they agree or have the same idea as you because you are open to have agreeing conversation with them. along the same line, if someone disagrees with you it is also easy to connect with them because you can have a conversation discussing different opinions.

    2. I liked both, but i liked the mock congress. The mock congress because it was interactive and I liked getting to hear different opinions and everyones ideas and thoughts about my idea.

  46. From last year, I remember learning about the advanced societies(Maya, Inca, Aztec). It was amazing to hear about all the things they could do. Many of the things they did are similar to the things we do today. The Aztecs were able to make floating gardens, and the Inca made bridges stretching from mountain to mountain! Those things personally are easy for me to remember because I love history. Especially if it's told in a story. Mr. Akers would usually act out what happened too so it was easy to get the whole effect. I can't wait to learn about WW2. (Comment to 31 dive) who are the people you know from WW2? I would love to know the stories they have to share. They must be incredible!

  49. I remember learning about the government and the contiential congress because it had many interesting points of view. I really liked the contiential congress because it really gave hands on experience when discussing the government. for example, when one person came up with a bill a lot of other people would have different opinions about it. one person would agree and tell why and change other peoples opinions while another Person would disagree and tell why. it was a really good way to learn about the government.

  50. One thing I thought that was interesting last year was how after the French and Indian war England was so in debt that they started charging the American colonies taxes. I thought this was interesting because the American colonies thought this was totally unfair, and started boycotting British goods that England put taxes on, making England loose even more money. I also think this is interesting because its the first cause that actually lead America to becoming an independent country, and if this DIDN'T happen we wouldn't have the same government or freedom that we have today.

I also remember when we were learning about how a bill becomes a law because of the School House Rock song Mr. Akers showed us.
I am looking forward to learning about both World wars because I never knew how either of them had started. I also don't know a lot about them in general and since they were pretty big wars that affected a lot of people I would like to know more about them.

  55. My favorite unit in Social Studies was on Slavery. My favorite topic on slavery was when they were trading slaves or moving them from one state to another. It was very interesting to see how slaves were treated, the lack of respect for human dignitity and how things have changed over time. I also liked that there were so many activities on the topic like reading the book Night John, watching the movie, completing DBQs and completing several projects. 60. I remember last year learning about the different taxes that Great Britain put on the colonies in order to pay off debt from the French and Indian War. Some of the taxes were the Stamp Act, which was a tax in paper products. Another one was the tea act which allowed colonists to only buy tea from the East India Company. The sugar act was a tax on sugar and molasses. But those are only a few of them. I think I remember this because I feel that we spent a lot of time on this topic last year. Also, I remember the topic because I found it very interesting.
